There are various views on where the Nakahechi route starts and ends, but at Buen Kumano, we consider Takijiri-oji as the starting point, Hongu Taisha as the midpoint, and Nachi Taisha as the final destination. Since the hiking difficulty differs between “Takijiri-oji to Hongu Taisha” and “Hongu Taisha (via Kogawa) to Nachi Taisha,” we recommend planning the route in these two sections.

However, even those who have completed long pilgrimages like the Camino de Santiago may find the steep ups and downs challenging. For the average hiker, it is recommended to take 3 to 4 days. Those with good fitness and mountain hiking experience may complete it in 2 days. There are several places along the way where you can exit to a road and take a bus, making it easy to adjust the plan based on your fitness and experience.
전반부: 타키지리 ~ 혼구
타키지리오지에서 혼구타이샤까지는 대부분 사람들이 걸을 수 있는 산길이지만, 긴 산티아고 순례를 마친 사람들도 오르내림이 많아 당황하는 경우가 있습니다. 보통 하이커는 3~4일 정도 소요되며, 체력과 산행 경험이 있는 분은 2일 안에도 완주할 수 있습니다. 중간에 도로로 내려가 버스를 탈 수 있는 지점도 있어 체력이나 경험에 따라 유연한 일정 조정이 가능합니다.

Hikers who leave the Takahara area in the morning typically pass by “Michi-no-Eki Nakahechi” after 3–4 hours. The restaurant inside serves freshly made lunch (vegetarian options available). As a general rule, please order from the eat-in menu if you wish to eat inside. If you want to eat take-out food or lunch boxes from your accommodation, use the outdoor tables.

This is the point where you can leave the Kumano Kodo trail and take a bus on Route 311.
Access
After passing distance marker 43, go down a steep staircase to where the trail crosses a paved road. Follow the direction of the “Detour” sign and you will see a moss-covered log bridge over a river. Do not cross the bridge. Keep following the paved road and you will reach Route 311, where you can take a bus at “Doyukawa-bashi” bus stop.

The Hongu area, which includes Hongu Taisha, Oyunohara (the Big Torii), and three hot spring towns—Yunomine, Kawayu, and Wataze—is a great place to rest after a long walk, with many accommodations available. In front of Hongu Taisha, you’ll find the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center (where you can register as a Dual Pilgrim) and a bus stop with routes to each hot spring area.

Hongu Taisha is open from 08:00 to 17:00.
Two Roads Pilgrims can register at the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center and optionally join a ceremony at Hongu Taisha. Please arrive early if you wish to register. Shops around the shrine also close by 17:00.
Staying two nights in Hongu or nearby hot spring areas (Yunomine, Kawayu, or Wataze) is recommended. You can complete the registration process, enjoy sightseeing, and recover from walking fatigue.

For those planning to walk the second half of the Nakahechi Route (Ukegawa – Ogumotori – Nachisan), the Kawayu area is also recommended as a place to stay the night before walking the Ukegawa–Koguchi section. You can walk 30 minutes along the riverside road to reach the starting point, Ukegawa. There is also a few shops along the way where you can buy a lunch box for your hike.

From the Ukegawa trailhead, located about a 30-minute walk from Kawayu Onsen, the trail to Koguchi is known as the Kogumotori-goe. This section is relatively gentle and easier to walk. In contrast, the trail from Koguchi to Nachi Taisha, called Ogumotori-goe, is the longest and most challenging part of the Nakahechi route, with many steep climbs and descents.
It is recommended to split this second half into two days: hike the Kogumotori-goe on the first day, stay overnight in Koguchi, and then tackle the Ogumotori-goe the next day. Since the trail is far from any roads and offers no places to exit midway, breaking the journey in Koguchi is the only practical option.
After walking to Nachisan, you can take a bus to Kii-Katsuura Station, where you’ll find many places to stay and eat.
후반: 혼구(우케가와) ~ 나치산
가와유 온천에서 약 30분 걸으면 나오는 우케가와 등산 입구에서 고구치까지는 '고구모토리고에(小雲取越)'라 불리는 비교적 완만한 코스입니다.
반면 고구치에서 나치 타이샤까지 이어지는 '오구모토리고에(大雲取越)'는 나카헤치 루트 중 가장 길고, 가파른 오르막과 내리막이 계속되는 가장 험한 구간입니다.
이 구간은 이틀로 나누어 걷는 것이 좋습니다. 첫날에는 고구모토리고에를 걷고 고구치에서 1박한 후, 다음 날 오구모토리고에를 걷는 일정이 추천됩니다. 등산로는 도로와 멀리 떨어져 있고, 중간에 하산하거나 버스를 탈 수 있는 포인트가 없어 고구치에서 나누는 것이 유일한 방법입니다. 오구모토리고를 완주할 수 있을지 판단하려면, '다키지리 ~ 다카하라' 구간 수준의 힘든 길을 7~9시간 계속 걷는다고 이미지해 보시면 됩니다.
